30/30: Kathy and I. Conflict. Arby’s.

9 11 2009

conflict final 3Kathy and I have had some major conflicts in our 18 years of marriage. One of the best was a few years ago on vacation at Hocking Hills in SE Ohio. The kids in the backseat witnessed an epic event that is often recalled and revisited today when we go out to dinner.

We were driving to dinner and an Outdoor Theater Production in a city about 45 minutes away from our campground. On the way we drove through a quaint small town which just so happened to be celebrating their Summer Fair. You know the kind where the downtown is closed and it’s transformed with rides, BBQs, elephant ears and whole lot of small town charm. “This is cool! Let’s stop here for dinner. The kids will have fun!.” We’ve got a few hours before the play, so I pull in to enjoy a little unexpected fun on our journey.

As I get out of the car, Kathy speaks up, “I was REALLY looking forward to having dinner at the drama.” (There was a special dinner before the performance with the actors in the production. Did I forget to mention we had planned on going there for dinner?).“Yeah, THAT was a good idea, but this is SO much better,” I chime back.

Better to me, not better to her. You can see where this is going.

The argument ensues which is followed with a huff from me, “Alright, let’s go. Mom wants to eat at the theater.” Three miles down the road the argument escalates to the point where we pull over to the side of road. A lot of sarcastic “I dont’ freakn care. I’ll do what YOU freakn want!” comments ensue and in huff Kathy gets out of the car and starts walking back to town. I turn the car around and drive along yelling from the window, “Get back in the car!”

After about a 100 yards, a whole lot of screaming from me and crying from the kids, Kathy gets back in the car. The conflict continues, but this time we yell at each other with the loudest form of anger…SILENCE. After 30 minutes of tension you could cut with a knife, we get to our destination. Kathy has now lost her appetite for dinner at the theater, but with three hungry kids in the car I pull into Arby’s. The family piles out of the car, but not me. I’m still stewing. While they enjoyed a thinly sliced roast beef, I sat in the car sulking in thinly sliced anger and resentment.

The story is funny now and we all laugh about that infamous day. At times now when we are going out to eat, the kids will say “Hey dad! Want to go to Arby’s for dinner? You can sit in the car.”

“Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you.” James 4:1

God is Moving BigTime at Epic

6 08 2009

The Holy Spirit moving big time around Epic the last few weeks. Jesus has been doing some extremely cool things as we reach up, reach in and reach out! Here’s a few, if you’ve missed them…

  1. “Lake Baptism”: Ten people came forward to be baptized for the first time and begin their new life with Christ. It was an awesome experience for tons of people who came over to the house in Shelby Twp to celebrate. Thanks Nicole for hosting! Jesus is so amazing! (video coming soon…stay tuned)
  2. “Day With Jesus” at Rochester Park last Saturday. We had a great group of people to spend a morning with Christ. After a little teaching on how, we went off to be alone in solitude. We were all blown away how Jesus moved and personally spoke to everyone, both young and old. Jesus showed up bigtime and BLEW US AWAY!
  3. “Servolution” This Saturday: Tons of people are signed up share the love of Christ at “Dancing in the Streets” in downtown Rochester this Saturday. We’ll be serving people by passing out FREE water bottles from 630-8. There’s still time to be involved – meet behind Bean & Leaf, downtown Rochester at 6:30

We started 2009 at Epic with this verse and the mission to reach up, reach in and reach out. God is working in an awesome way to make his dream a reality.

God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home. Ephesians. 2:20-22

Thanks for all you do to help build Christ’s home! Stay on your knees and keep your eyes focused on Him.

Choose What is Better

27 07 2009

“Mary has chosen what is better.” Those are some of the most haunting words in scripture. (if you don’t know the story…read Luke 10).

This Saturday, we’ve blocked out a morning with the simple goal to be with Jesus. It’s a time to come out of the ministry fields and sit at the feet of your Savior. There is NOTHING more important, NOTHING more worthwhile, NOTHING more critical for your life than this. NOTHING. And there is nothing better than listening to Christ both speak into and lead your life.

DETAILS: August 1, Rochester Park, 8:30-12 AM,
SCHEDULE: 1. I’ll lead in some “how to’s” of solitude 2. you will have some alone time with Christ and his word. 3. We’ll come back together and share.
DIRECTIONS: Park at Pine Street Lot (off Walton, 2 blocks west of downtown Rochester

Thirteen years ago John Ortberg mentored me in this area of my life. Here’s a quote from an article by him.

LIVING AN UNHURRIED LIFE by John Ortberg.
“Jesus urged his disciples to take time out. Following Jesus cannot be done at a sprint. If we want to follow someone, we can’t go faster than the one who is leading…Hurry is not just a disordered schedule. Hurry is a disordered heart. At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus went to the wilderness for an extended period of fasting and prayer…He ended his ministry, as he began it, with the practice of solitude. Jesus taught his followers to do the same. And as he said to them, “Come away to a deserted place,” he says to us still. Wise followers of Christ’s way have always understood the necessity and benefit of solitude”

Servolution ‘09: Get Out

17 06 2009

servolution2WHAT IS SERVOLUTION?
Servolution is not an event; it is a culture. We are actively pursuing the lost and the forgotten to show them a God who is passionately in love with them. We stand ready with one heart, saying, “I will serve others and show them the hope they can have in Jesus.” We serve because small things done with great love will change the world.

WHY SERVE?
1. Jesus did.
2. The church is best expressed outside its walls.
3. It’s a tangible expression of the love of God for humanity.
4. It makes us irresistible to the world.
5. It tears down barriers and opens hearts.
