Tough Question: Angels and Demons?

16 01 2008

tough-question.jpgSomeone asked me the other day if all the angels were good in the beginning, how could they sin? What happened? For all you deep thinkers out there…this one’s for you.

The Devil and Evil Angels are real…Luke 11:15-19 “But some of them said, “By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.”

1. Angels were created good and holy. Since they were created within the 6 day and initially fell under the verdict very good (Gen. 1:31)

2. Because of 2 Peter 2:4 “God spared the angels that sinned” it’s assumed that the angels were in some type of state of “trial and probation period” in which they were able to sin and not to sin. Some did and some did not. Things were not as they are now. How this works we are not completely clear. Obviously hell was created at some point in here after the angels fell.

3. Angels fell sometime before the fall of man (Gen 3:1-14). We don’t know when this was, but is was was sometimes before the fall of man. John 8:44 “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Most people assume that pride was the first sin of the angels from 1 Timothy 3:6 “He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.” Also check out verses Isaiah 14:12-15. His first temptation to Adam and Eve was the same…you shall be like God. Pride is the glory, praise and lifting up a person, that is meant only for God. Martin Luther called it “his perpetual endeavor to transfer the glory of God to himself.”

4. The bible passages make an assumption that angels are sealed in their fate and those that defected from God became evil and can nevermore become good.”Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41 (an interesting thing about that verse is it assumes the primary reason for hell was it was created for the devil not people. People end up there because they choose to reject Christ in their life). also Matthew 18:10.

The good angels are sealed as well in their heavenly duties and cannot be tempted to sin. “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.” Matthew 25:31

Over the years people have thought that devils might be converted and saved from damnation, but this opinion is not shared by they devils. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Matt. 8:29 also John 12:31

5. Verses about what evil angels do. Harm a body (luke 13;11, 16), Harm someones, possessions (job 1, Matt. 3:31-33). Lure someone away from God (1 Peter 5:8, Luke 8:12). Unbelief of nations (Eph 2:1-2, Acts 26:18, Col. 1:13). False Doctrine (Matthew 13:25, 1 Timothy 4)

6. Protection and Comfort for us. We do not need to fear evil angels. God’s authority and His power is greater.
John 10:27-29
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

Ephesians 2
1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Romans 8:31-28
What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.

35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

7. We are not powerless against evil angels. In Christ we have authority over them.
Luke 10:16-10
16″He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” 17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
