30/30: Tigers. Initiative. Risk.

tigers-d.jpgA couple years back I noticed something extremely odd the Detroit Tigers uniforms. They have two completely different D’s. They have got to be the only team in MLB like this. Check it out. The blue “Old English D” is on the uniform and the “white D” is on the hats. Did a deadlocked committee decide this or what? Crazy. It got me thinking about the uniquely different stamps that God has placed on men and women. It says in Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Men and women are stamped with the image and character qualities of our creator.

When God made man, He stamped men with masculine character qualities. When He made women, He stamped women with female character qualities. Thus, when we know God in a deep and intimate way, we will know what it truly means to be a man or woman of God. In the Men and Women series, we are looking at four characteristics of men and four of women. When we know who God has made us to be, it frees us up to become the unique men and women God has called us to be.

Week 1: The Stamps of Initiative and Risk.

When we look at God, He is all about initiative and risk. We don’t serve a laid back Lord. In Romans 5:8, Paul writes, “But God demonstrates. His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” He took initiative and took the first step to reach out to us. He died for us even though some of us would reject His offer of forgiveness, eternity and a life changing relationship with Him. That’s a big time risk.

Here is the deal, men. We’re stamped with God’s image of initiative and risk. It’s a good thing, it’s a God thing. We are leading, but where? Where are we taking initiative and risk? Where are we leading those around us? A lot of us men are are leading in the wrong areas. We take initiative in dating relationships for our own selfish and sinful benefits. We are taking adrenaline and business risks, but when it comes to spiritual things we take the back seat and play it safe. It’s time to step it up!

  1. Man Challenge: Instead of taking initiative for your own benefit…become a Spiritual Leader
  2. Man Challenge: Instead of becoming adrenaline junkies, become a person who takes faith and righteousness risks.

Guys, are you taking initiative to become the kind of spiritual leader God is calling you to be? Men, I want to challenge you to use that first burst of offensive energy every morning to pray and to read the Bible. If you are not being lead personally by Jesus Christ, how are you going to take spiritual initiative with your spouse, family and at work? If you’ve never done this before, start with a simple prayer “Jesus, I want to get on the offensive. I am going to be intentional. I want to reflect the initiative and risk that you’ve stamped on me. I want to give my energy to you today.”

The Yankees uniforms also have differences like this, a lot of it has to do with the fabric.
