Catalyst: Rivers and Floods

30 05 2008

READING: James 2

LEARNING:The river illustration really hit home as we move forward as leaders. When you’re in a flood, the first thing to go is vision. You’re doing-doing-doing. but where are you going? Effectively channeling people, time and resources on Epic’s focused vision is so critical for us to become the community God has called us to be.

I remember years ago listening to Ed Young from Fellowship Church describe the difference between the church when it was 100 and now that it’s 20,000. He said, “The biggest difference is I say NO a lot more. People come with ideas. ‘We need to do this. We had such and such ministry at my other church. We need that here.’ Why? If it doesn’t fit with our vision, No. We need to stay focused. Doing less is more.”

What would happen if believers from all over the globe came together to impact the world like never before? For four weeks, Epic Church will be part of something bigger than any of us as we join together with hundreds of churches to pray for and serve our communities, our cities and our world with “One Prayer.”

One Prayer: Starting June 8

28 05 2008

Sometimes God shows up and everything changes. Yesterday, I ran across something that Christ is doing in the world called “One Prayer.”

We were planning a different series in June, but after going to Christ for direction it was clear that He was leading Epic to be part of this. We’ve always been engaged in this crazy movement of God in the 21st Century to impact the world for Christ in new and innovative ways. There are so many people to reach and so little time. Currently there are over 1100 churches and 700,000 Christ followers around the world joining together to impact the world.

I love it when God calls an audible at the line of scrimmage and changing our plans. We move forward. We press in. And we expect the unexpected. I am so pumped about what God is going to do at Epic and around the world in June. I believe the next four weeks will…

  1. Promote unity in the body of Christ.
  2. Expose Epic to the greater movement of God in the world.
  3. Infuse new spiritual passion for God’s mission for the world.
  4. Challenge us to go deeper and more dangerous in our relationship with Christ.

People Get Ready: One Mission. One Prayer. One Church. One God.

Steven Curtis Chapman: When Love Takes You In

23 05 2008

I got the news this morning that a freak accident took the life of Christian musician Steven Curtis Chapman’s five year old daughter, Maria Sue. One of his teenage son’s accidentally hit her backing out of the driveway. Full Story. We live in a neighborhood with lots of kids, and Kathy and I have talked a number of times how easy that could happen. I usually don’t write about these kind of events, but Kathy and I saw him in concert last summer where both of his sons played in the band. During the concert he shared a lot heart felt stories about his family, so in some crazy way you feel like you know them. As a dad, husband and follower of Christ, I’ve always been moved by the way that Steven communicates the hope of Christ in everyday life. He is actually one of the first Christian artists that God used to grow my faith back in the 80’s and stills moves me today – Cinderella.

My heart and our prayers go out to the Chapmans as you grieve the tragic loss of the adopted daughter your love took in and is now in the arms of the One who will take us in for all eternity.

Catalyst: The Mirror Effect

22 05 2008

READING: James 1 (5 times)

LEARNING: Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the fairest one of all. Mirrors reflect our true image and what we are reproducing in the lives of around us. This chapter was challenging for me, because I feel like I have been in a bit of a funk over the last few years. The things that I are at the core of who I am (passion for Jesus, leadership development, taking risks for Christ and using your life for Christ) have somehow taken a back seat in my life.

30/30: Insecurity. Hide/Seek. Gideon.

21 05 2008

As a kid, one of the greatest events on a weekend was having a sleepover at a friends house. We would stay up late, play Atari 2600 and have the most extreme games of hide and sleep. The person who was “IT” would have to go into the bathroom and stare at the light bulb for two minutes while we hid. When they came out into the pitch black room where you couldn’t see anything. One night was legend when my brother took the lampshade off a floor lamp, put it on his head and pretended to be the lamp. His hiding spot was so good he was never found.

There was a guy named Gideon in the Bible who was great at hiding. It was during a time when the Israelites were under attack from the Midianites, and so he was hiding in a wine press threshing grain so he wouldn’t be spotted by his enemy. “The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘Mighty warrior the Lord is with you!”’ (Judges 6) Gideon’s realizing God must have it all wrong replies, “Yeah right God, You’ve got the wrong dude. How can I save Israel? I’m no Norman Schwarzkopf. I’m insecure and unsure about myself. I am the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least in my family.”

Here’s the God looks into your life, He sees something in you don’t see in yourself. He Read the rest of this entry »
